Hi Sylvain,

Here's another of my screenshots, adesklets 0.4.0 running weather-0.3.0 on top of Fluxbox http://fluxbox.sourceforge.net/ . The fluxbox style is http://themes.freshmeat.net/projects/perfectblue_flux/ Perfect Blue.
In addition, I have a transparent aterm.

By syfou (Core Developer & Desklet Author), on Sat Feb 26 22:28:57 2005: Previously sent to me by email.

Here are a few screenshots people sent me over time.

First, from eManceyan (Manuel Cesar Yanez) from Argentina, using openbox on a debian woody system:

http://adesklets.sf.net/images/contrib/thumb/emanceyan_0.jpg-http://adesklets.sf.net/images/contrib/thumb/emanceyan_1.jpg-http://adesklets.sf.net/images/contrib/thumb/emanceyan_2.jpg

Then, from Tim Schutte from Michigan (our moderator) here is a fluxbox-based desktop on Mandrake 10.1:

This time from Colorado-based Scott Horowitz, running an uncluttered Archlinux desktop using Xfce:

And finally, my personal favorite to date, from Robin Pfeifer living in Germany on an unspecified linux, also using Xfce as a window manager:

By syfou (Core Developer & Desklet Author), on Sun Feb 27 11:24:51 2005: From Russia with Love?.

adesklets web site has been experiencing tons of visit from Russia lately, mainly due to a post on linux.org.ru. This made me think I do not have a single screenshot of adesklets in Cyrillic (from adesklets 0.4.0, you can use ISO 8859-5 characters - probably KOI8-R too, but I haven't tried it)... Anyone?

By darkliquid (Desklet Author), on Sun Feb 27 13:38:42 2005.

Hi, I'm new here. Since syfou was so kind as to contact me about my current desktop, I thought I'd sign up and post it myself :)

Here you go:
http://adesklets.sourceforge.net/images/contrib/thumb/darkliquid_0.jpg

I'm using the Gartoon icon set for the Yab and Mailer aDesklets. As for the rest of my desktop, its a nice minimal XFCE4.2, using the iconbox instead of the taskbar. In fact, the only reason I have the panel at all is because of the clipboard, pager and systray.

I have no idea where I found that background image, but its nice.

The GKRellm theme is prime_23 slightly modified to have black text for the calendar and clock.

By TimSchutte (Fearless Moderator), on Sun Feb 27 15:44:02 2005.

Hi,

Very nice screenshot! I especially like the gkrellm theme. Gotta go pick it up!

Thanks,
Tim

By ZeroDivide (Desklet Author), on Sun Feb 27 15:55:54 2005.

First off I have to say great job to the adesklet devs :D
I've been waiting for a lightweight desklet app for a while now, and you really pulled it off.

I'm not a python programmer but i've been playing around with adesklets and its very easy to use.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v285/zerodivide/adesklets-thumb.jpg

This shot is of my second display running XFCE 4.2, xmms with the Root Spectrum Analyzer on the bottom and a few system monitors that ive been playing with.

By rockman (User), on Mon Feb 28 13:34:05 2005.

I use XFCE and don't have or want Gnome things around...
But I wanted desklets and I was so lucky to find these wonderful adesklets!

I use d3a icons for yab and configured asimpleclock to be a little fancier and to fit the "techno-space" look of the desktop...
The three lines on the desktop (under the graph thing) are a custom root-tail script showing my SETI@home progress state.
It could be a good idea to make a SETI monitor desklet...

GTK Theme: Aero (with custom d3a stock icons)
XFWM Theme: Perl (custom)

Gkrellm theme: Aero

By exilejedi (Core Developer & Desklet Author), on Mon Feb 28 21:26:14 2005.

Rockman and ZeroDivide, very nice desktops... I especially like the look of those system monitors. When are we going to see them on the main desklet download page? :)

This is using yab 0.0.2 and weather 0.0.3 adesklets. I replaced the icons of both using the GANT icon set I found somewhere else online.

By syfou (Core Developer & Desklet Author), on Tue Mar 1 13:10:44 2005.

Well, I guess I could have mentionned alternate icons sets did exist for weather... Nice screenshot!

XFCe4 running:

torsmo
asimpleclock-0.0.2
weather-0.0.3
yab-0.0.2

I modified weather a little bit so that I got that "feels like" temperature there.
Also I like things simple and removed the background image entirely.

By syfou (Core Developer & Desklet Author), on Tue Mar 1 14:14:41 2005.

Nice. Do not hesitate to contribute your changes back If you are happy with them. :-)

By the way, since you are from Helsinki, don't you have any desklet with a bit of Finnish on them, just to show off the internationalization features?

Well I'll be happy to give to others also if somebody wants it.

I like to keep my operating system english so I don't have anything Finnish.

I quickly tried to take a demo-shot with something Finnish in the weather-desklet but for some reason when I tried to restart the desklet it didn't come up again.

I'll troubleshoot some more to see if it's my configuration or maybe something with the desklets.

By syfou (Core Developer & Desklet Author), on Tue Mar 1 14:58:33 2005, last edited on Tue Mar 1 15:18:47 2005.

Oh, do not make extra work if you do not use it, that was not the idea. :-)

Just for you to know: I am searching for people wanting to be maintainers/developpers of all my demo desklets but yab... I am not opting out of the project, but I have no talent for design or theming... I will be quite more useful as a programmer.

Weather could use a good rewrite of the display routine, since it is so unconfigurable... I fact, version 0.0.3 is only a fifteen-minutes forward port to adesklets >=0.4.0 from previous 0.0.2 version. It wasn't rewriten at all to take full advantage of config files, as I took the time to do while making the switch from mailer 0.0.2 to 0.0.3...

By nucular (User), on Tue Mar 1 15:14:52 2005.

I would be happy to help, but unfortunately my python-skills are next to none.

Nor do I have any talent for designing. I know what I like, but I don't know how to make something look like it.

Quote:

Oh, do not make extra work if you do not use it, that was not the idea. Smile

Well I had nothing better at the moment to do, so why not do something useful. :)

Now I'm afraid I'll have to continue tomorrow.

Hi Guys,

Here is another screenshot.

http://us.f3.yahoofs.com/users/41b63b38ze43d6d96/c9de/__sr_/a728.jpg?phj1nJCB7_ka3VCv

Weather-0.0.3 is working well, thanks to help from Sylvain. Added yab-0.0.2, using the config.txt.minimal cuz of video card issues with the special effects. I substituted my own favorite apps, with default icons that came with Mandrake 10.1.

I finally got my xmms_bar working. I modified it so that it doesn't hide itself and added volume-controls.

Fluxbox 0.9.12, gkrellm, gdeskcal, root-tail, transparent aterms with off-focus fading, and of course a whole bunch of adesklets... acountdown (to monitor my anticipation), newsfeed, weather, and yab (also using the Gentoo "l33t" icon set from http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/icons.xml).

And now that I've gotten darkliquid's calendar desklet working on my box, here's all of the same, only without gdeskcal...

http://photos.pirnat.com/etc/pix/2005-03-06-1-thumb.png

By jeepston (Desklet Author), on Mon Mar 14 21:44:40 2005.

Here is my screenshot with modified weather desklet. I didn't set alpha to 0 just to show the desklet. As for me, I like desklets w/o any backgrounds, so I didn't work at it. I just use complete transparency.

http://www.pa.uky.edu/~goykolov/screenshots/weather_.png

From top to bottom - weather desklet with default icon theme; um theme; weather.com theme; original weather desklet and calendar.

I added two features to the desklet: weather forecast (so far just for three days, but it can be change) and possibility to change icon themes.

Besides, I needed to use another xml parser to get information about forecast.
Almost everything (parser, icon themes and a lot of ideas) was taken from iWeather gDesklet. I'm not the python programmer, so the code seems rough to me. But if anyone wants to take care of this desklet - you are more then welcome :)

PS. Does anyone need this desklet as a separate release?

PPS. Here is how it looks by itself:

Looks real nice! It appears you were quicker than me one this one. I will definitely not complain. :-) Make me thing I never answered your request about total mail number in mailer...

jeepston wrote:

Oh, it's up to you, really. The thing is: xml.expat is really fast (for an xml parser), and included by default on most Python installation. And my Weather would have been easily extensible to get forecast as well....

jeepson wrote:

I do, and I am pretty sure many others will. May I suggest you open a new thread in the About new desklet forum? This way we can all begin to look at your code. I you think it is already good for inclusion, you can as well submit it right now (see adesklets documentation for details). Thanks for your work!

By jeepston (Desklet Author), on Tue Mar 15 00:52:30 2005.

Ok, I've sent a submisssion e-mail about this desklet. What is the time of processing of that e-mail? And do I need to wait until it appears on the adesklets web-site before I create a topic in "About new desklets"?

By MockieMoo (User), on Tue Mar 15 01:16:38 2005.

Although I was a bit put off at first by the way adesklets works, I have to admit I didn't RTFM. After doing so, however, I found it to be pretty powerful and most excellent. I'm looking forward to more applets and new releases.

Anyway, back on topic, here's a shot of my humble desktop showing the calendar, weather, and yab applets in action:

Note that I am kind of a weather aficionado. ... I added a few icons I had to yab.

Looks nice! And about switching off the big icon - another entry in TODO list :)

By Bitpicker (User), on Thu Mar 17 03:54:42 2005.

Now that the weather forecast is fixed (thanks for that), here's another screenshot: http://www.nyboria.de/images/desktop3.jpg. The set of icons on the upper right is an application called apwal (http://apwal.free.fr/index.html) which is an alternative starter application which pops up in the area of the mouse cursor once I press a key on my keyboard. (Binding apwal to a key is not part of apwal itself). You can freely position icons around the cursor and link them with commands. It can be a program starter, but for that I have yab... I have set it up so that it mounts and unmounts my various drives.

Nothing special about the desktop otherwise. It's Xfce4.2 on SuSE 9.1.

My current desktop

The background is an altered version of synthetic heart by j3concepts

The 3 grey panes on the bottom left are doityourself desklets, the 'ps' demo one, a quick hack to cat some info from i2c sensors from the /sys directory and a hack using code from rbscrobbler to extract info from Rhythmbox.

The test at the bottom is the uptime command output using doityourself again.

Damn I love have a dual screen desktop. 3200x1200 baby! Yeah!

2) Send me your hacks for doityourself! (If you want to, of course :D). Don't worry if you think they are not completely clear; I can tidy them up and add them to the demos.

I posted on my site the information for each script: darkliquid's doityourself scripts.

I am however thinking of making the rhythmbox script for doityourself into a standalone desklet much like mpdcontroller

xfwm theme is at TiSkin theme I converted from the TiSkin theme for Metacity I think, I'm not sure, it's all just graphics for me anyways. :) I
found the TiSkin GTK theme from gnome-look.org. If you mean
xfce4-panel, I'm not using it as you can see? :) The "panel" is modubar.

And yes i agree with you, those handles on xfce4-panel are _really_

I select screenshot based either of my aesthetic tastes, or on the fact that they were taken from a specific platform or window manager that I find pertinent to illustrate as a working combination for adesklets -- thanks for taking the time to publicize this one: users from more "heavy-weight" Windows Managers (or Desktop Environments, as they prefer to be called) are understandably a relatively small part of adesklets community....

aDesklets got me out of a big dilema, and for that I am grateful. What you see in the picture is running under Ubuntu Breezy, with adesklets 0.50

By the way: if you need a deb for Breezy, I built one, and you can find it here:

By louis_nichols (Friend of adesklets), on Mon Feb 6 09:19:56 2006.

well... It IS in the repos... for breezy... but only version 0.48 :D

Glad you liked the screenshot! I had a very big dilema when I started using Ubuntu, cuz I liked it, but was very attached to KDE and superkaramba. Only gDesklets doesn't even come close. Anyway, aDesklets seems even better, being less resource-hungry than superkaramba. That's why I like it. Besides, it will work the same way under KDE, which is GRRRRRREAT. :D

I am working now on a desklet to display the title of the currently playing song from XMMS somewhere allways visible. But I have never programmed in python before, so it might take a while. I am making progress, though: it displays the title, but doesn't update. And I would like to make it scroll, too.

Edit: a little stylistic effect. ;)

This forum doesn't support on-the-fly computations of thumbnails. You can either compute it yourself (ImageMagick, feh, the GIMP, etc.), or use one of the numerous free services on the Internet that will do it on your behalf (ImageShack, Flickr...). Then, you just embed the correct bbtags as explained in the forum help:

Code:

By louis_nichols (Friend of adesklets), on Thu Feb 9 19:14:18 2006.

ok, thanks. I think I can get it right. :)

so... here it is:

http://louis-nichols.uv.ro/advanced_desktop1_thumb.png

It hasn't changed, adesklets-wise. Same desklets on the desktop (mailer, yab, weatherforecast, anetmon, acpumon), just moved around and some colours changed. But I managed to get the machine to handle true transparencies and I think they go along quite nicely.

This is Ubuntu Breezy, running Gnome with kwin instead of metacity. Icons on yab are from nuoveXT theme and wallpaper by americanpsycho at deviantart. Don't think I'm forgetting anything...

Greets!

Edit: well... I guess you can't see it's kwin there, because none of the windows have borders. I wish I could take away the menu items from the console, but haven't figured out how. (yet) So, now that we're here: can anyone tell me how you can get those terminals without any windows decorations? just blended in the background? and how you get terminals to be transparent, but still leave the font visible? With kwin, transparency affects the whole window.

By Anonymous (User), on Fri Feb 10 08:46:23 2006.

To the all people who play with transparency of windows - beside the lack of contrast and the fact, that it would be tiresome for eyes to work on such desktop - it is not pretty at all. It looks "sick", "miserable", as the windows were infected by serious illnes and are going to die soon. Just as cancer victims, very slim because of nutrition problems and pale on face. Think of something different that transparency everywhere. There's plenty of such screenshots already.

And here the transparency amount is reduced, and it is IMHO better done:

Well to me, it looks like this is not just "reducing the transparency amount", but plainly not using real transparency... I agree such a desktop is more pleasant for everyday work though; too bad nothing in this screenshot suggests real transparency is properly used (if used at all, which I doubt): that would be news... There is absolutely no element but the background that we see through on any window, and the windows manager contextual menu is definitively only using good old pseudo-transparency which looks, well, slightly wrong.

By louis_nichols (Friend of adesklets), on Fri Feb 10 18:23:19 2006.

Well, I agree that one cannot work on transparent windows. I don't. I only use transparency for inactive windows (like the ones in the screenshot I just posted) and moving ones. Occasionally, if I want to monitor something, I make one allways on top and always transparent.

Nobody says transparency has any practical motivation (which is not to say that it cannot have any practical use(s)). It's mainly eye-candy and is quite likely a matter of taste and habit. I have used transparncy this way under winXP for a long time and have become used to it.

So... can anyone tell me how DO ppl get those "terminal on desktop" effects? I mean, just having the text of the terminal, without any indication of windows, with fonts fully visible?

EDIT: also about transparency... I was wondering: why would we make a transparent desklet that displays info about XMMS and controls it and not just use the real XMMS, transparent? That makes sense to me.

By louis_nichols (Friend of adesklets), on Sun Feb 12 02:42:50 2006.

For WindowMaker you click with the right mouse button on the title bar, select "Attributes", and in "Window Attributes" select:
-Disable titlebar
-Disable border
etc.
If you want to raise its window, click it with "Alt" key. If you want to move it, drag it with "Alt" key. I also remind, that you can scroll terminal content by rolling mouse roller in for example gnome-terminal.

Maybe someone here uses WM except me :D

Even xterm has supported this for years, but you are right it is worth knowing... In fact, the same feature is supported right in real terminals these days: no need to rely on higher-level pseudo-terminals anymore (it was first introduced in vt102 as far as I recall): try the SHIFT+PG UP and SHIFT+PG DOWN combination, even on your first tty after a boot!

This is OpenSUSE 10 and Window Maker window manager.

It has it's own system of dockable applications, their area should be 64x64 pixels. They are on the right edge.

There is one basic method for good integration - take colours from background :)

Nice, clean desktop. :-) The transparent SystemMonitor is especially appealing.

Hi Guys,

Haven't been around for awhile, so I thought I would post a screenshot:

I forgot to finish the last post!

Anyway, the platform is Ubuntu 6.06, running Fluxbox with six Deskicons, the Calendar and Weatherforecast. I am not sure what the name of the wallpaper is, I have about 100 wallpapers. Just look for recent fluxbox styles on freshmeat.

Thanks to Sylvain and the other developers!

The desklets are:
