Hi
carlsjr,
starting using a new operating system such as Linux with no
prior exposure to Unix is a challenge by itself: you might
want to look at alternative software such as
gDesklets or
SuperKaramba, that
put a lot of effort on user friendliness.
adesklets is targeted at "advanced end-users": configuration
is purely textual, desklets installation support is minimal;
if you never saw a shell, adesklets is probably not the right
software for you: you will probably run into a lot of
difficulties trying to get it to work; if you insist using
adesklets, there are places such as
linuxquestions.org where
they assist new Linux users with about any task.

P.-S. Look into the manual of your shell (
man sh, or
man
bash, or
man tcsh,
etc. .
man `basename \`echo
$SHELL\`` to be precise) for the meaning of
cd.
