I was just wondering if the adesklets developers are planning
on having an irc channel, and if there is one.. where can it
be found? I suggest irc.freenode.net ? :D
Was just wondering.

I personally do not. I find irc (or any other kind of
permanent IM) far too distractive to my taste, so I do not
use any on a permanent (i.e. "always open") basis. If you or
any one else really need instant access to me for a specific
issue, we can always schedule a meeting by email (just state
the topic), and I will punctually appear on any medium you
want (irc, icq, skype, 802.3, even msn sessions).
The forum seems good enough so far for most user issues. If
you feel you could use an irc channel anyway (to talk to
desklets authors for instance, etc), feel very free to post
the coordinates here. Personally, I just will not use it
unless punctually to discuss specific issues that I feel
cannot be easily tackled without quicker feedback than what
the forum, the adesklets-devel mailing list or plain email
provide... That doesn't mean others woud not appreciate it
themselves. :-)

Oh ok, I just thought that in time, when the community and #
of users grow that a wider more direct means of communication
i.e: IRC would be an easier way to help people out or just
have a bit of a yap.
But you're right, right now there wouldn't be much use for an
IRC channel.

I agree that while at the moment, there is little advantage
an IRC channel would have over the forums, it could be useful
once the userbase improves.
I would quite enjoy a place where user and developers can
bounce ideas and implementations off each other in real time,
which I feel an IRC channel would probably be well-equipped
to handle.
In all honesty though, I tend not to frequent IRC channels
very often nor do I really communicate via IM that much
(though I leave IM on all the time), so I probably wouldn't
use it very much anyway even if provided.
All in all, I agree that the forums seem adequate for
everyones needs for the time being.

I just reiterate I have nothing against the idea of an IRC
channel. If people choose to have one (let's say #adesklets on irc.freenode.net, for instance), I will gladly
publicize it properly (in the announcements, in the news,
even in the documentation if you want me too).
But I will simply not take care of it
nor ever use it, because I dislike using instant
messaging unless under precice circumstances. When you have
to write an email or a post, you need at least to formulate a
coherent idea. This is encouraged by the facts that those
communications leave traces and take time. Since it requires
a supplementary effort, it also self-filters a fair amount of
frivolous messages. Besides, since I am not a native english
speaker, I enjoy having a chance to re-read myself just to
make sure that what I wrote can be understood.
As for the size of the community, I do not think it matters
that much; do not forget IRC channel frequentation is pretty
well modelized as a compound poisson process (as first
formulated by Langevin)... :-) What would be needed is a few
"developpers in residence" willing to hang around there most
of their online time, and I will not be one of them...

I'd use an IRC channel, but I'd be annoying with stuid
questions so nobody would want me there ;)
However now I know that you're more available for help than I
thought Sylvian I might organise to borrow you for 10 minutes
or so one day to sort out some question I've got. No hurry
though, I've just got like 5 different desklets mid-progress,
none finished as I've hit a point where I can't figure out
how to proceed next :(

No problem,
cs-cam. Just let me
know by email (syfou@users.sourceforge.net).
